Using a pedagogy project, nine young people from the Taramana French intermediate level class choose a research theme every three months. Then they outline a project, gather documentation, prepare presentations, organize the concrete realization and in the end, evaluate it by writing up a report.
This approach has been very motivating and quite effective. Students associate the acquisition of grammar, vocabulary and conjugation with notions of history, geography, information research and the application of group working methods.
After studying their roots evoked on the Day of the Dead, traditional family gatherings or the visit to the S21 genocide museum, they are now focusing on the discovery of their country.
A STUDY TRIP TO KOMPONG CHHNANG
Since November, students have been working on a project whose ultimate goal was a trip to the Kompong Chhnang region, a 2-hour drive from the capital, Phnom Penh.
They prepared class presentations covering different topics such as:
- traditional local crafts (pottery, basketry, weaving, silver jewelry)
- harvesting and manufacturing of palm sugar
- life in floating villages, the Tonle Sap River and the monsoon
- Oudong, the history of the ancient capital of Cambodia
On January 19th, nine young people went for a weekend to meet local artisans, they also sailed on the Tonle Sap through the homes of the floating village and visited the city of Oudong. They finally experienced in the field what they had studied in the classroom.
The project has now been wrapped up with the writing of their travel journal where each student related his/her discoveries.
