A younger makeover of Taramana’s communications

Taramana has welcomed some new dynamic volunteers within the Association and the communication department has really taken on a promising new life.

A new volunteer started her job as Communication/fundraising Project Manager at the beginning of February. She is surrounded by a solid volunteer team which includes Margot, Valentine, Jordan, Janis, Jocelyn as well as Simon in France. This new French International Service Volunteer is enlarging her network and thus giving communications at Taramana a needed visibility boost. A new look for the taramana.org web site is underway and will be on-line in the next few months thanks to help from the company Coccinet .
As of next month, the format of the monthly newsletter will offer a more functional, integral and interactive look and feel. New sections and new content will allow you to learn more about Cambodia as a country and about the daily life of both the kids and volunteers at Taramana.

Ordinary meeting of the Taramana General Assembly

Created in 2005, the Association held its 10th Annual General Assembly meeting on July 8th at 7:30 pm at the Lanton Cultural Centre in France.

It was time again for the annual meeting of the Tarmana General Assembly.   Both the activity report and the financial overview were presented by the President and founder, Dr Jocelyn Dordé. Also in attendance were the current members of the Board of Directors. The members watched some new videos and learned about the possibilities for perspectives to be offered by the new Centre which will open this summer.
The meeting ended with the traditional cocktail-dinner at 9 pm. This year, members were able to bring family and friends to the meeting, but only those up to date on their membership fees were able to take part in the voting.
Thanks again to all those who attended this annual meeting.

A “health” project carried out without hitches for the kids at Taramana

The programme of child health-related activities, started back in 2015 and co-financed with the Aquitaine Limousin Poitou-Charentes Regional Council and our partner Solidarité Tiers Mondes Bassin d’Archachon, brought together a mixed French-Cambodian team.

It is with great satisfaction that we have seen a true improvement in childrens’ health especially when we look back to the state of health of the children living in the slum area before the creation of Taramana in 2005. Malnourised, often carrying parasites and affected by various chronic infections which impeded normal child growth, the children showed signs of a lack of protein and other elements vital to proper development and growth. Since 2011, when a cantine was first opened at the Centre, the Association has been striving to reverse these tendencies by offering balanced meals. Nevertheless, it was only last year that a truly versatile health project was created with help from our partners.

School results on the rise

This funding has permitted both the construction of the Centre’s new infirmary , which is expected to open in the the Summer of 2016, and it has also helped the implementation of more concrete actions : enhanced vaccination program, distribution of snacks to children, combined multi-vitamin cures with intestinal deworming, and the purchase of new equipment for the hospital. And the results evident: a dramatic increase of 5% in childrens’ weight with an average size of more than 4 cm for children at the primary school level, fewer gastro-intestinal and cutaneous infectious diseases. In passing, improved educational outcomes for all children have been seen.

A new health project on the horizon

Prevention and learning about personal hygiene and oral health through education, which is both inexpensive and effective, can be attributed to a perfect cooperation between the Cambodian staff and French workers who are always ready to help out with on-site team training. It’s quite an irony, but not at all surprising at Boeng Salang, that it’s the kids themselves who are actually the ones who end up educating their own parents on specific hygiene measures, such as simple hand washing before meals.

So proud of all these achievements, Taramana has decided to start a new health project in line with the first, and let’s hope that it will be as promising as all the others!

The date for moving into the new Taramana Centre has been set for Summer 2016

After 15 months of non-stop labor, the construction of the future Taramana Centre is reaching its final finishing stages.

We must admit that our students from Boen Salang have been very patient. We’ve nearly reached our objective and the dream of all the students will finally become reality.

With its contemporary and ecological architecture, the new centre, with its three floors, looks out over the village. If all goes well, the move will be done duirng the last week of July. The building will be able to host twice, even three times, more people given its 200 square meters of space.

New activities on the horizon

The new centre which is airy, well-lit, secure and functional , will meet all the promises initially made by the archictect, Mr. Seng Vannak, in charge of the overall project.

In addition to three class rooms and a new computer room, the children will benefit from a music room and a dance hall where yoga, theatre and other activities will all take place.

As for sports, with the availability of a large central space, the children will be able to engage in activities such as volley-ball, badminton and even ping-pong.

We are really counting down the days until the big moving day!
